The Troublemakers Manifesto
The 1st project task was to design and create key art work for a talk on troublemakers in the industry. But troublemakers in the figurative sense, not literal. It was to channel something that challenges the norm, something that makes you think or change your mind. I wanted to create something with impact yet still say within the lines of typography.
Sketches
Concept 1 & 2
Middle finger idea or Standout idea.
Concept 3
Megaphone idea.
Digitals
Design 1 - Megaphone idea
Design 2 - Middle Finger idea
No feedback because of absences.
Week 7 - Project 1
Design 2 - Middle finger idea
Feedback: One of my
design ideas was accepted. The middle finger to challenge authority. However the
image as advised by lecturers needs further editing as well as text around the
image needs to be rearranged to have less blank space.
Week 8 - Project 1
Continuation of design
Correction 1
Correction 2
Feedback: Lectures were unimpressed by the changes and urge
me to look around to see if i can get a better sense of what changes i have to
make.
Personal thoughts: I decide to rearrange all the text while
keeping the original image.
Week 9 - Project 1
Final approved design
Feedback: Mr Vinod said the design was good. However the "I" in the "manifesto was changed to look like a "!" exclamation mark on the middle finger making it slightly difficult to read and pushing it a little bit but still accepted.
Final PDF with black background variation.
Feedback
Week 6 - Project 1
Did not receive any feedback as i was absent from class due to flu and fever.
From Feedback Sheet: Warning! Where is your feedback? Update your feedback immediately upon receiving it. Do not delete the red text. You type in black.
Week 7 - Project 1
The design idea was there, how ever the image editing had to be changed to to be less messy and more two toned. Mr Vinod also advised me to rearrange the text more as it was too rigid and structured.
From Feedback Sheet: You did not follow the formatting as what we have informed you earlier in the semester. We have given you samples. You need to change. Refer to this link. Week 8 - Project 1
Mr Vinod was unimpressed by the changes as he felt there was close to no change and it looked the same. Advised me to continue trying and look around to see how others are designing their key artwork.
From Feedback Sheet: The eportfolio does not follow the format as instructed and as referenced. The comment has been given in the previous week but yhou have not acted uponb it. Please do it immidiately. Week 9 - Project 1
Mr Vinod said the design was good. However the "I" in the "manifesto was changed to look like a "!" exclamation mark on the middle finger is making it slightly difficult to read and pushing it a little bit but still accepted.
Reflections
Experience
Week 6 - Project 1
As a new student I've been getting to know more students in the class. Everyone has a distinct design style and created really interesting draft key artworks for project 1. I did feel a bit intimidated to i decided to sketch a few ideas. I was particularly scared to present the middle finger design. But it seemed like designing that was easiest for me.
Week 7 - Project 1
I digitised the idea in Adobe Illustrator. Although some students liked my initial design, it seemed a bit off to me as there is a section that doesn't seem to fit into the key artwork. Lecturers, didn't like the text placement and asked me to do more.
Week 8 - Project 1
Tried to do something different, and at a point i liked it, until the lecturers saw it and said it's not much different to the 1st design i made and felt like i didn't put in effort to try to change it. I felt a bit discouraged as i did actually put in effort. In the spur of the moment i ran through my pinterest to find ideas. Collecting some ideas i did a completely new design to try to impress the lecturers.
Week 9 -Project 1
My newest design seemed to be going well, as not only me but the lecturers approved of it. That lead me to immediately start work on the poster designs.
Observation
Week 6
A lot of the students were making great progress on their key artwork drafts. I was still sketching and trying to figure out my idea.
Week 7
I walked around the class to have a look at everyone's work, some were strange, but there were a few that really stood out to me. They really had a professional design quality to their artwork and it motivated me to do better.
Week 8
I tried my best to change my artwork but it just didn't seem right. As per Mr. Vinod's advice i went around the class to see what others are doing. Everyone seemed to have a similar idea in mind but executed their designs quite uniquely different from one another.
Week 9
I finally had an approved design, but everyone else had moved on to their collaterals so i had a lot of catching up to do.
Findings
Week 6
I didn't really learn anything yet in this week as i was just starting to develop my idea for project 2.
Week 7
I was finding it really difficult to take my sketch to digital and make the text arrangement look appealing. But i tried my best anyway.
Week 8
Overthinking the design has killed the design. It made it look very unappealing and i had to drop the 2nd design idea and just move on to a new one.
Week 9
Looking for ideas online really helped me find a suitable design style for my key artwork. I now want to keep a more open mind and look at more artwork before i design somthing.
Further Reading
The whole book really explained how any everyday object and be used to form letters and words. It really puts into perspective how anything can be used in typography and there is little to no limit when it comes to typographic designs.
