Week 13
Colour Test
I explained my idea to Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul about using filters to differentiate different or multiple text layered together using coloured filters. They liked the idea and suggested that I find specific text or a specific message that i want to convey through the use of the filters. I then explain that in the event of too much text being fit into a small space, this is useful to be able to fit more text into the space without worrying that it won't be readable as the filters can separate the text by color. They then suggested me to try small mediums like name cards, for example to make a name card with a sleeve that has filters so that the name card text can fit a lot of text. Mr Shamsul also suggested i watch the movie National Treasure to get a better idea of the filters.
Week 12
Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul specified that i should focus on the text arrangement and design on the printed material since i'm not creating new fonts. They also said i should find more mediums and different print materials to showcase the color filters. Mr Vinod also advised me to buy my filters as soon as possible to test the colors and decide which colors should be used in the filter design.
Week 13
When presented with printed material of final project, Mr Vinod and Mr Shamsul were not impressed by the final outcome. Mainly because the color separation didn't work out very well as the filter color and printed color are different. Mr Vinod specified that i should not focus on the printed material but show more of the use and functionality of the experimental concept. Create more art work (preferably 10 per design) to showcase the usability and maybe consider taking one of the designs and animating it.
One major problem that everyone faced seem to be catching up with the final printing of collaterals for their project 2. I didn't expect it but i managed to get everything printed before Friday so i felt relieved that one burden was now over. However, the stress was just beginning as i now am having trouble with finalising my idea for final project. I randomly searched up interesting designs and stumbled upon a viral video that was trending in 2018 and manage to create form and idea from that.
Week 12
Submissions for project 2 were on its way. I realised that there was one thing i haven't done with collaterals for project 2, which was taking photos of the printed materials. So after class i did a quick photoshoot session in Taylor's photo studio. During class i asked Mr. Vinod & Mr. Shamsul about the color and design test i made. The printer again decided to print my project incorrectly so i had to present them with a strange looking paper. However, they noticed some issues with my designs and advised me to make some corrections.
Week 13
After telling me to not think about the physical printing of the project, Mr Vinod urged me to make more digital versions of the artworks and possibly make an animation of few of them to show how it works. I took his advice and decided to add posters into the designs.
I found that the most easily used color or easily filtered colors are that of neon as explained by the reference i used. But not all commercial printers are able to produce neon tones.
Week 12
I found out after buying my filter sheets that although i can't rely on commercial printing shops to print neon colors, i can use the colors closest to the filter color i used to be able to filter out most of the color to make a visible difference and contrast in the design.
Week 13
After a while of thinking, i found more uses and applications of my idea and implemented it into my final designs. I think they are good. I hope that the lecturers feels the same about them.

Chapter 1: Minimal
In the 1st chapter, the book explains about the importance of simplistic use of text but still keeping a dynamic layout. Designer Massimo Vignelli theorised that there is only 12 good typefaces that can look good in layouts. He specifies that limiting typeface use helps to maintain a clean look. The chapter also elaborates on existing designs, showing the typefaces used in the layouts and explaining how the designers created the layout designs.

Week 11 - Final Project
Proposal of Idea 1
Stereoscopic 3D text
My idea was based on images i found of layering different coloured graphics over each other and using coloured filters to differentiate the colours.
As shown in the image above, i wanted to create an experimental project that test if it is possible to put multiple text on each other but still be able to read it by separating it by colour using filters. I presented the idea to the lecturers and to my surprise they approved of it. They initially thought i was going to design a new typeface for this project, but i explained it's more towards playing with the color and layering of type.

Week 12
Colour Test and object test
Color and design Test 1 (A3)
The above image is a design test sheet i created to test the color filters and to see which filter would work with which color. Test prints didn't go very well. However, upon further research, brighter neon colors seem to be best fit to be filtered out with specific colors. After color testing, it's obvious that not all commercial printers are able to print neon colors so the end results came out quite dull. I went ahead to purchase filters 1st in order to continue the testing phase.
Week 13
Colour Test
Color Test 01 (A4)
Further color testing revealed that colours that most closely match the filters used are best for the separation of colors. I chose to use green and red filters as the 2 colors are on the opposite end of the color wheel, creating maximum contrast for color separation.Creating Final Designs
For this process, i wanted to take lectures advice into consideration. My main idea was to create 2 different designs which were wedding invitations and business card designs. Based on what the lecturers had told me i should make multiple designs of each medium to showcase the capabilities of the two tones designs. However, upon further thinking and research, I decided to include poster designs into the finals to showcase how the designed could be used in public places to convey more than 1 topic of information. A few designs were animated to show how applied filters could help display specific information and text on the design.
Process
During the designing process, many different designs, styles and type was tested.
Color Filters were tested for filter accuracy.
Animating of the color filter display on photoshop.
Application
1. Dual Tone Poster
The idea behind choosing posters as a medium to display the application is because, although posters are generally big, too much text or designs on a poster most times results in overcrowded designs that present a level of difficulty when trying to read the text or any form of data on it.
Design 1
For this 1st design, event promotion was chosen to be presented. The dual colored poster displays a winter and summer event in their own respective colors.
When the blue filter is applied, most blue colored text or designs are filtered out leaving only the red text to be readable. In most cases, a person who sees this poster doesn't necessarily have to carry around filters as simply snapping a picture with their smartphone and using editing apps can simply overlay a filter on the snapped image.
When a red filter is applied, the information for the summer festival is revealed. This gives great advantage as multiple designs can be placed in one poster and simply be seen by applying filters.
Design 2
Design 2 also is based around events. The advantage here is that even for one single location, multiple event names can be mentioned and only one display poster is needed to share the information about the events.
For this second design, i choose to use a combo of red and green as apposed to red and blue of the 1st design to show variable capabilities of color use. The green filter, doing the same as the ones above filter out the green tones in the design, leaving the red elements readable.
Vise versa for the red filter.
Design 3
This 3rd design shows the unlimited possibility of using the dual tone method. Even something as simple as a quote poster can be made more unique simply by overlapping and separating colors.
When filters are applied, you are able to see the the visual impact of the text. This gives opportunity to experiment with a multitude of different text designs.
Design 4
Another simple, yet cost effective use of the method is on food menu posters. To save on printing on a lot of paper, the method can be implemented by designing one poster with 2 tones to differentiate breakfast and lunch specials.
Just as before, color filters provide an easy way to separate the colors and allow for easy reading of the specifically colored text.
Design 5
Another major use, of which i find to be highly beneficial to malaysians, is to differentiate bilingual text. With this method of layering, many languages can be layered together so that one poster can be read by most malaysians.
When the blue filter is applied, the english text can be read.
Whereas, when the red filter is applied, the malay text becomes visible.
2. Invitations
When it comes to invitation, a small card can carry a lot of information. However, with the dual color layering method applied, separate invitations can be combined into one. Many different invitations can be made, but the ones shown below are for wedding invitation in its few variations.
Design 1
This version of the design allows for a groom's version and a bride's version of the invitation to be combined together, reducing the need for 2 invitation for different sides of the family.
The green filter show the Groom's side of the invitation.
While the red filter shows the Bride's family invitation.
Design 2
In certain wedding, the guest that are invited for the wedding aren't always the same as the guest invited for the reception. This design gets rid of the need for 2 invitations.
As shown, simple filtering provides 2 different invitations in the same card.
Design 3
The 3rd design is just a variation, but it can fit more information into a small space.
An invitation is separate from its RSVP contact information.
3. Name Cards / Business Cards
Name cards are the smallest of all the designs presented. We know by now that name cards have to carry a lot of information, at the same time it's quite specific to the card holder. But this method creates a new opportunity to fit more and even 2 different individual's information onto a card.
Design 1
I used a simply company i designed as an example. Both a manager and a barista working for a coffee producer have their individual information on a card.
As shown, the red and blue filters separate each individual's information, at the same time, unique play of the logo, lets you see who's information you are looking at. The coffee bean shape only shows when the red filter is applied, showing the info of the barista.
Design 2
This designs show a variation of the type play on the text side of the card.
As shown, 2 individuals can be separated by the colors of the specific type.
Design 3
This design also plays with the logo a bit. The idea of the logo is 2 tick signs that are placed in a way that to form a logo.
As shown, the green filter reveals the red text and the red tick. But, then the red filter is used the text on the info side is flipped so that the greed tick on the logo side will still be shown as a tick the right way up.
Design 4
The forth design plays very well with people with multiple occupations.
As shown, a graphic designer / photographer can fit 2 different occupational information with the corresponding designs on a name card.
Design 5
The design doesn't always have to be applied on both sides. This is a variation of the design.
The logo side of the design remains the same, but the information side displays 2 different individual's contact information.
Note
Although the designs displayed above only have 3 colors and colored filters used, they method is not limited to only these colors. The idea is that as long as the 2 colors chosen are in contrast at the same time the filters used correspond to the color they are filtering, it can be used.

Observations
Week 11
Students in the class were all struggling to pull all their artworks for collateral together and choose the right printing company to print their materials.
Week 12
Students were all trying their best to create ideas for the final project, as some have yet to confirm and approve their idea with the lecturers. Some have made progress but nothing close to done.
Week 13
I noticed that some students have were close to finishing their finals. I felt a bit bad for myself as the printed material i had made was less than ideal, in fact it was horrible. But seeing as to how some student's work was criticised more than mine, i felt a little better.
