Project 2 (Week 7)

Book Design

After the illustrations in project 1, we were to begin designing the final book. I began by implementing the Van de Graff grid style as I like the gutter it created for better distancing from the middle of the page to avoid loss of readability after binging. I also implemented a basic book grid as well to show a different style to compare.

Feedback

Week 7 :
I was absent from class.

Week 8 :
My use of the alternate Van De Graff grid arrangement was accepted. However, many of my minor text arrangements were changed or corrected based on Mr Vinod's directions.

Week 9 :
Mr Vinod is worried about my progress with the book as he felt my book was lacking in artwork complexity and felt very blank. He pressured me to fix it as soon as possible to avoid any further problems from this point on.

Week 10 :
Mr Vinod has gone through most parts of my blog and advised me to update according to the blog references that he has provided as my blog has missing updates.

Reflection

Experience

Week 7 - I was absent from class.

Week 8 - I missed a class and used the recorded class sessions previously to adjust and design my book. In the class i showed the lecturer my work, he wasn't against it but there were textual elements that had to be heavily readjusted to better fit the size and flow of the book.

Week 9 - I felt very nervous to present my work, but as expected Mr Vinod had a lot to comment about my work not being up to standard. I'm still trying to figure out everything that is to be arranged properly in the book design and left out certain artworks that were previously made.

Week 10 - Annoyingly enough, my internet and wifi decided to fail me this week as my computer was disconnected from the class chatroom and I resulted to watching the Facebook Live our lecturer had put out to join the class. And because of the my attendance was taken as absents.

Observation

Week 7 - I was absent from class.

Week 8 - I've seen most student's work and I was very impressed with some of them. It really highlighted their ability to create artwork that showcased the writing in a visual format.

Week 9 - Everyone was close to completing their work, i felt intimidated as my work was criticised for lacking in complexity and detail. I'm trying to add more detail and points of interest to the book so that the book in a whole doesn't seem empty.

Week 10 - From what I could see, everyone's work was done and ready to be submitted. Feeling quite relieved, we were asked to continue into the animation phase of our project.

Findings

Week 7 - I was absent from class.

Week 8 - I was beginning to understand the comment that the lecturer was giving based on how he wanted to change my text styles. I was seeing the image that I had on mind and with his guidance I was able to further create the text arrangement that better suited the book style.

Week 9 - I felt a bit pressured when the lecturer mentioned that my work was lacking. I'm focusing on fixing all the issues he mentioned to better complete my book.

Week 10 - I realised that book making isn't always easy. One of the most important parts I found was filling pages up with necessary content and creating interesting visuals. It's not just about the bulk of the information, but how you out it into the pages to create a sense of flow and direction that reflects the content in the book.

Book Cover Design Mastery

by Dave Chesson
I wanted to make sure I understand the process of book cover design better so I head over to an article I found extremely helpful to me, Book Cover Design Mastery. To begin, the author of the article emphasized strongly on the importance of finding the "right" reference that's suitable to the book genre as they are essential in attracting the right audiences or readers. A few sources of references were provided such as, Amazon books and Pinterest. Once the understanding of the genre and the collection of references are settled, the author continued on the design principles such as using the color wheel to support color schemes that attracts attention, using the right set of typography that draws appropriate emotions to the book, and lastly the book cover image should create an emotional response from the readers, either it's the feeling of suspense, intrigue, calm, etc.

6 Keys for Book Page Layout: Don’t Ignore These Design Rules If You’re Self-Publishing

by Meena Azzollini
In this article, the author aimed to discuss about the essential rules of book layout design anyone should ever miss out. I was not very keen on reading on it at first, but I did it anyway and even though I do know many of the things from the tips, a few of the author's advice seemed very practical and helpful for use.

As expected, the author first talked about the margins of the book as they are described as the anatomy of a book and "one of the most important elements of book layout and design." In combination with the white space element, the header and footer should be left with space for important information such as book title, chapter, or page number. Ideally, the bottom margin is bigger to provides a balance of white space after a block of text on a page. The article went on discussing about the things I'm already aware of such as the line width, typography, images, widows and orphans.
